Everybody loves going to the salon, whether you’re going for a new look or just trying to maintain what you already have. After a day at the salon we feel refreshed, confident, and satisfied. But what if you’re looking for a new stylist? What if you just moved to town and you don’t know who to go to? You can ask around, word of mouth is a great way to get where you’re going. But you can’t just choose anyone. Here we go over three questions to ask a hair stylist before booking.

How much training and experience do you have?

A stylist who is comfortable with their training and experience will be confident in telling you all about it. You may want to ask if they specialize in one thing or another, and what services they offer. You may even want to find out whether or not they participate in continued education and keep up with the latest techniques and trends. A hairstyle is an important aspect of your overall aesthetic, and how you present yourself to the world. It can make a difference in several situations, such as whether or not you get a specific job, or whether or not you’re happy with your look. Hairstyles aren’t permanent like tattoos, but they do last a long time. Get to know the stylist before booking an appointment. If you do this, chances are way higher that you’ll be pleased with the outcome.

Do you have a current portfolio?

Hair stylists who do good work are proud of what they have done. They likely will have a portfolio with dozens or even hundreds of pictures of their work that you can look at, it’s just a matter of finding it. You can check the website first, oftentimes it will be there. Even after you look through their portfolio, you may still have questions about your specific hair type. It is OK to ask to see if they have any pics they can share of similar work in the past. You may even want to schedule a consultation where you can talk about your specific hair, your experience with it, and your hopes for the future. Find out what they can do with your type of hair. You want to find a good match here, as this will also contribute to your overall satisfaction.

How much will your services cost?

This last question may be a little harder to ask, but it is important to make sure that you’re matched with somebody whose services you can afford. You may be able to spend a little extra for a splurge day or special occasion, but what about returning to that same stylist every time you want to get your hair done? You don’t want to have to look for a different one each time. It is important to think of your own finances and what you can realistically do. This could make a difference in who you choose.
